Guy Sebastian is back releasing new music of his own.
The Voice Australia coach has shared the feel-good single “I Choose Good”, a celebration of that special person who makes one’s life worth living.
“The song talks about taking my mum’s advice on board: ‘in choosing your life partner, avoid the drama,'” Sebastian explains. “Choose someone who’s your teammate but will also call you on all of your downfalls. Every time I’d ignore that sound advice, I’d find myself in a bind and I definitely made some mistakes along the way before I found The One.”
“I’ve had some hits and misses / I know perfect is ambitious / This is the biggest decision I’ll make,” Sebastian says with purpose before the joyous chorus bursts forth: “That’s why I chose you (That’s why I went and chose you),” he proudly sings.
As Sebastian explains, his new single essentially describes his wife, Jules, who’s his “absolute best mate.”
“The week that I left for LA to write this song, Jules and I were talking about how we’ve been together for 22 years and we still stay up ’til so late just talking. Trying to solve the world’s problems!
“I don’t think there’s anything that we can’t get through. We’ve been through so many highs and lows, and in the last little while we’ve had so many adult things to navigate and I think we’re just closer, which is awesome. It’s not always the way. It definitely means “I Chose Good”.”
Sebastian last released an album in 2020 when T.R.U.T.H. became his third chart-topping album in Australia, and “I Chose Good” is the beginning of the “next chapter of music” for the singer.
Sebastian’s new single came together during songwriting sessions in LA earlier this year with Warren “Oak” Felder (Demi Lovato, Nicki Minaj, John Legend). Sydney-based producer Chelsea Warner happened to be working with Oak at the time and sat in on the sessions, eventually lending her vocals to the song.
Noticing that their sessions were producing a lot of heartfelt and emotional music, Sebastian decided that it was the right time to write a “fun, happy wedding song.”
