Beck has announced two very special guests for his upcoming Australian shows.
In April, Australian audiences will be offered the privilege of seeing the age-defying alternative rock star in an intimate setting. Beck will perform two special headline acoustic shows in Sydney and Melbourne (see full dates below), as well as appearing at Bluesfest 2023.
Delving deep into his acoustic roots, these shows will highlight the pure song craft at the heart of Beck’s sound, and further emphasise his unprecedented versatility (check out Rolling Stone Australia‘s list of 10 of his songs that should particularly go down well at these shows).
In Sydney, one of Australia’s most revered musicians, Robert Forster, will support Beck. The Go-Betweens icon just released his eighth solo album, The Candle and the Flame, which he wonderfully broke down in detail for this publication earlier this month.
A life-affirming tribute to growing old comfortably and finding happiness in one’s twilight years, The Candle and the Flame offered some of Forster’s finest songs in years.
“Considering mortality, ageing, contentment, anguish and, of course, love, in his singular way, these songs are profoundly moving and quietly cathartic,” Rolling Stone Australia wrote at the time of the album’s release.
In Melbourne, it will be the turn of Gena Rose Bruce to back up Beck. The singer-songwriter recently released her intensely thoughtful second album, Deep Is the Way, featuring contributions from lo-fi legend Bill Callahan.
In other Beck news, the musician released his new single, “Thinking About You”, last week, his first original material since 2019’s Hyperspace. The heart-tugging ballad recalled Beck’s stunning work on classic albums like Morning Phase and Sea Change.
