Melbourne-via-Sydney singer/songwriter Thomas Keating has shared a trio of stripped-back tracks for the latest instalment of Rolling Stone’s ‘In My Room’, a series in which artists perform from home following a couple of years which have seen live shows become a rarity.
It was just back in October that Keating returned with his first new piece of music in close to a year. Formerly based in Sydney, Keating had moved to Melbourne in the preceding months, working on new music and forging ahead with the goal of wrapping up his forthcoming album soon.
Now, with good things in the pipeline, he’s given us a stellar rendition of three gorgeous tracks from across his storied career, performing alongside Ally Calder from the studio which hosted him during the recording of his new record.
Kicking things off with “Today I’m Staying Home” from 2019, it quickly becomes apparent just how much of a powerful performer he is, allowing his intricate songwriting and passionate energy to really let itself shine, before launching into recent single, “Lunatic”.
“This song is about my confusion at the state of the whole world right now,” Keating explained upon the song’s release. “I do have some pretty strong views on different aspects of society and politics, and I view people who don’t share my opinions as a bit mad sometimes. But I have also come to the realisation that they probably think I am mad. So who is the ‘lunatic’ then?”
Closing out the three-song set with a rendition of “Cold Night” (written at a time when “I was feeling rather sorry for myself”), Keating proves his worth as an immaculate artist, and undeniably leaves fans eager to see what comes when he new record arrives next year.
