Just weeks after making his return to US TV by way of an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Chet Faker has shared his first new track of the year thanks to “Get High”.
Released this morning following its premiere on triple j yesterday, “Get High” follows on from the fittingly-titled “Low”, which arrived back in October as Faker’s first new single under the moniker in five years.
Beginning with a loose, jazzy piano line, “Get High” quickly falls back into familiar territory by way of a slick downtempo beat and Faker’s silky smooth voice.
Much like its musical predecessor, “Get High” seems to follow in a similar lyrical vein to “Low”, with the former seeing Faker state that “And just because I tried, doesn’t mean I’m wrong/Just because I’m cryin’, doesn’t mean I’m not strong,” while the latter sees his point out that “Just because I feel low right now, it doesn’t mean all that I’ve got has run out.”
“Sometimes you just need a break,” Faker explained of the new single. “I find myself wanting to escape just for a little while and the song sort of showed up on its own.”
In an interview with triple j upon the track’s premiere, Faker expanded upon that notion, explaining that he “was just feeling like that”.
“The world just needs to relax right now… everyone needs to chill out,” he noted. “That’s what the song is, it’s kinda funny and silly. I just want people to just vibe out… take a little exit in whatever fashion they find appropriate.”
While “Low” and “Get High” are the first new pieces of music fans have heard since he returned to releasing work under the Chet Faker name, it remains to be seen when or if a new album will follow in the near future.
