The estate for late hip-hop icon Aaliyah have announced that they’re working to finally make her music available on streaming platforms.
“To our loyal fans: we are excited to announce that communication has commenced between the estate and various record labels about the status of Aaliyah’s music catalogue, as well as its availability on streaming platforms in the near future,” the singer’s estate announced over Twitter.
“Thank you for your continued love and support. More updates to come.”
It comes following fellow hip-hop heavyweight Missy Elliot remembering Aaliyah on the 19th anniversary of the star’s death.
“Your music has always been 10 STEPS AHEAD & Your sound is still FUTURISTIC,” Missy Elliott tweeted. “Your fashion always been ONE OF KIND. You rocked your outfits with SWAG & SAUCE! Just know that you are still inspiring generations til this day. We love you.”
Elliott previously told Billboard that she and Timbaland supposed to work on just one song for Aaliyah, but they ended up doing eight tracks.
“She had an ear and she knew what that music made her feel like. She was next level to understand that this is some next-level [music],” she shared. “This is not just the sound that’s going on right now — this is a new sound that is being created. This whole movement is new.”
Aliyah began working with the Timbaland and Missy Elliott for her 1996 album One in a Million, with the self-titled collection released just weeks before Aaliyah’s death.
Aaliyah was just 22 when she was killed in a plane crash on August 25th, 2001 from the Bahamas to Miami after shooting filming the video for her track “Rock The Boat”.
The singer was accompanied by video director Douglas Kratz, 28, record label executive Gina Smith, 30, bodyguard Scott Gallin, 41, hairstylists Anthony Dodd, 34, and Eric Forman, 29, make-up artist Christopher Maldonado, 32, and her friend Keeth Wallace, 49.
After an inquest was launched into the artist’s death, Dr Giovander Raju concluded that the singer died from severe burns, a blow to the head and severe shock.
He also confirmed the star had a weak heart and would never have survived the shock even if she had been spared in the crash,
He ruled: “[She] went into such a state of shock, even if she had survived the crash, recovery would have been near impossible.”
