BENEE Shares Upbeat New “Lockdown Song”, ‘Snail’

Fresh from the release of last month’s “Night Garden”, BENEE has released her latest track, recorded at the end of New Zealand’s lockdown.

BENEE will release her long-awaited debut album, 'Hey u x', next month.

Mere weeks after the release of her Kenny Beats and Bakar collaboration, “Night Garden”, New Zealand indie-pop artist BENEE has returned with her latest solo single, “Snail”.

An upbeat, bouncy track that sees BENEE delivering a feel-good chorus with enigmatic lyrics, the track feels almost made for the live stage, with its quirky delivery and enchanting composition turning this into one of the 20-year-old Kiwi artist’s finest songs to date.

While BENEE recorded her “Supalonely” reworking “Lownely” mere hours before New Zealand went into lockdown, “Snail” is a product of the other side of things, written and recorded with Josh Fountain shortly after the country reopened.

“When we were in lockdown, I was fascinated by snails,” BENEE explains. “There wasn’t really a lot to be doing, so I would spend a lot of time outside looking at snails and would think about how they’re doing their own little thing and they’re all free.

“I just played around with the idea of being kind of like a snail and how I come out in the rain. Being stuck inside because of COVID, it’s kind of my lockdown song.”

Paired with a video by Goodbye Robot, “Snail” ostensibly serves as the latest taste of a forthcoming release by BENEE, who was recently named Apple Music’s first Up Next Artist from New Zealand.

BENEE’s “Snail” is available now on all streaming services.
