Jim Halpert and Pam Beesly may have one of the most memorable — and relatable — love stories in television history, but couple’s ultimate bliss took nine seasons to get there.
In celebration of beloved comedy series The Office debuting on NBC 20 years ago, Jenna Fischer — who played Pam alongside John Krasinski‘s Jim — discussed the lasting love fans have for the characters and the props she’s held onto years after the final season aired.
One of those props, however, managed to slip her grasp. In the show’s first season, the Dunder Mifflin crew organizes a secret Santa for the holidays. When Jim gets Pam, he gifts her a teapot with little mementos of their friendship hidden inside, including a note confessing his feeling for her. While the gift exchange goes awry thanks to none other than “Manager of the Year” Michael Scott (expertly played by Steve Carell), Pam eventually trades the teapot back — but not before Jim secretly steals the letter before she can read it.
When speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Fischer revealed that it was Krasinski who ended up with the teapot in real life. “John got the teapot! How does that make sense? But I got my Dundies,” the actress said, referencing the contentious office awards Scott handed out to his employees.
“She ratted me out! Yes, I have the teapot, which I realize is quite the memento,” Krasinski told the publication. “It actually came to me by happenstance as our incredible prop master Phil Shea sent me a box of props some time after we had wrapped.”
During the show’s ninth and final season, Jim finally gives Pam, who is now his wife, the note. In 2020, Fischer revealed on her podcast Office Ladies that Krasinski wrote her a heartfelt message “just saying what our time together on The Office meant to him” for her to read in the scene.
“I’m on camera, and I open up the note that John had given me, and I just start crying,” Fischer recalled. “I’ll never say exactly what John wrote, but just know that it was perfect.”
For those looking to take a nostalgic walk down Slough Avenue, Rolling Stone put together a list of the “25 Best Moments from The Office” in celebration of its 20th anniversary. Of course, Jim and Pam’s “Casino Night” kiss makes the list.
