A new episode of South Park will not air as planned tonight, Sept. 17, with creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone admitting they did not get the episode “done in time.”

In a statement shared with Rolling Stone, Parker and Stone said, “Apparently when you do everything at the last minute sometimes you don’t get it done. This one’s on us. We didn’t get it done in time. Thanks to Comedy Central and South Park fans for being so understanding. Tune in next week!”

Unlike past seasons, Season 27 of South Park has been airing every other week, as opposed to weekly, the scheduling ostensibly giving the pair more time to craft episodes in response to current events. They have, of course, been doing a lot of that this year, taking on various facets of Donald Trump’s second term and the MAGA movement.

That’s why the episode that was supposed to air tonight was arguably one of the most anticipated of the season, as it would be the show’s first since the assassination of Charlie Kirk last week. Parker and Stone have given no indication that they plan to address Kirk’s killing at all, but there has been speculation since Season 27’s second episode, “Got a Nut,” did spoof Kirk.

“Got a Nut” originally aired in early August and featured a storyline in which the character Clyde Donovan starts a podcast and is awarded “The Charlie Kirk Award for Young Masterdebaters.” Following Kirk’s death, Comedy Central pulled the episode from rotation on TV, but it is still available to stream on Paramount+.

Kirk, for his part, took a few jabs at the show for its “nasty” treatment of conservatives and Trump, but admitted he liked the parody of himself. “I personally think a lot of it was hilarious towards me,” he said. “I gotta be honest. Some of it was very funny and I don’t think we should have too thin of skin.”

As it stands, South Park will air six more episodes this year, with the tentative schedule set as: Sept. 24, Oct. 15, Oct. 29, Nov. 12, Nov. 26, and Dec. 10.
