Taylor Swift, the great uniter. Lena Dunham has credited the singer for connecting her with actress Meg Ryan, who Dunham cast in her upcoming Netflix film Good Sex opposite Natalie Portman.
Speaking to Variety, Dunham confirmed that she convinced Ryan to join the film after running into her at an Eras Tour stop in London. “I decided, it’s now or never, and I’m going to shoot my shot,” Dunham explained. “She couldn’t be a lovelier person.”
She added, “Shout-out Taylor—thank you for that. She brings everyone together. She makes the world go ’round.”
Good Sex is currently in production in New York City and stars Portman as a couple’s therapist who gets back in the dating scene after getting out of a decade-long relationship. The film also features Mark Ruffalo and Tucker Pillsbury.
Dunham and Swift have been longtime friends. The Girls creator co-starred in Swift’s 2015 music video for “Bad Blood” music video, and Swift was a bridesmaid in Dunham’s wedding to musician Luis Felber in 2021. Dunham tends to be tight-lipped about their friendship in interviews, although in an interview with The New Yorker last year she admitted she is “protective” of her famous pal.
“Probably the two things I get asked most in life are ‘What is Taylor like?’ and ‘Can I have tickets to the Eras Tour?’” Dunham said. “And usually my answer to both things is no, but I will say that she’s everything that you would want her to be. She’s kind, she’s devoted, she’s introspective, she’s emotional, she’s funny as f—. I guess my feeling sometimes is, ‘Isn’t she giving us enough, guys?’”
More recently, Dunham reflected on her friendship with Swift in an interview with the Times, describing the singer as a role model. “She’s a mind-blowing person,” Dunham said. “I think she’s extraordinarily well adjusted and emotionally intuitive. And it’s really amazing for young women to see that in front of them.”
