Sorry, “MAGA Gang,” but Jimmy Kimmel has no intention of packing his bags and moving to Italy.
During his summer break, the Jimmy Kimmel Live! host appeared on the Sarah Silverman Podcast, and among a variety of topics, touched upon the state of politics in the United States and how celebrities having been leaving the country amid President Donald Trump‘s second term. “I did get Italian citizenship,” Kimmel told Silverman. “I do have that.” He added, ““What’s going on [with Trump] is as bad as you thought it was gonna be. It’s so much worse. … I feel like it’s probably even worse than he would like it to be.”” Although Kimmel did not cite Trump’s presidency for getting his Italian citizenship, Trump allies and conservative media fueled rumors that the comedian was leaving the country.
On Tuesday, Kimmel returned to his show and dispelled any speculation that he was fleeing amid his years-long feud with the president. After acknowledging that the “MAGA gang went nuts” after news of his newly obtained Italian citizenship and playing a reel of Fox News and Newsmax clips, Kimmel declared: “I’m not moving to Italy.”
“I never said that. This is where I live. This is my country. I have no intention of running away from it, especially because of Donald Trump,” continued the late-night host. “Let me tell you something, I would move into Mar-a-Lago if I could, just to drive him insane.”
For context, Kimmel said, “I’ve been trying to get Italian citizen for almost 20 years. I love Italy,” before joking, “Mostly what I like to do is bring my passport to parties and show it to people and make them jealous.”
Kimmel has been a vocal critic of the president. In April, the host dedicated his monologue to mocking the Trump’s first 100 days in office, noting that it has been more “prehistoric” than historic. “It’s difficult to give Trump’s first 100 days a grade, but if I had to I’d say it falls somewhere between F and U,” Kimmel said. “Don’t get me wrong, there have been some positives. Unfortunately they have all been pregnancy tests for women who slept with Elon Musk.”
