The girls of Girls will girl once more with Lena Dunham confirming the celebrated HBO series will return for a special five-episode run.

Production on the new limited series will begin in 2027, 10 years after Girls aired its sixth and final season. Much of the show’s core cast will return, with Dunham reprising her role as Hannah, Allison Williams as Marnie, Jemima Kirke as Jessa, Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna, and Andrew Rannells as Elijah.

All five partook in a teaser announcing the reunion, technically appearing as themselves, but more or less playing their characters from the show.

In a statement, Dunham, who created the series and will write and direct the new episodes, explained that she was always open to bringing Girls back, but only if “there was a specific story we were burning to tell.” While Dunham “missed” the characters, it took her a while to picture what their lives might be like in the present.

“Then, right around my 40th birthday, they started talking to me in the shower,” she said. “And, as you may remember, once this fivesome starts talking it’s pretty hard to get them to stop.… It’s rare that you get the chance to return to something that changed your life with the gift of hindsight and a whole new level of gratitude and understanding. I love these girls (and boy), our friends at HBO, and all the people who have continued to discover the show and remind us afresh why we do this, which is the joy of being together … and the chance to wear yellow mesh …”

Girls enjoyed a six-season run on HBO between 2012 and 2017. During that time, it was nominated for 19 Emmy Awards (winning two), and six Golden Globes (also winning two, including Best Television Series — Musical or Comedy and Best Actress in a TV Series — Musical or Comedy for Dunham in 2013). Since the end of the show, Girls has remained a much-lauded and regularly rewatched touchstone of the 2010s, landing at Number 65 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Greatest TV Shows of All Time.
