It’s official: an authorised Gilmore Girls documentary is on its way. The movie’s title and release date has yet to be revealed, but it will premiere on HBO Max and feature contributions from star Lauren Graham and creator Amy Sherman-Palladino.

The documentary will examine the beloved series from the lens of creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband, executive producer Daniel Palladino, per Variety. The film “reveals how the show eclipsed expectations to become a cross-generational phenomenon by unpacking the unique alchemy of the creators, cast, crew and collaborators.” Superfans can expect never-before-seen footage, script pages, behind-the-scenes clips, and appearances from Graham, Sherman-Palladino, and other unannounced cast and crew members.

The HBO Max film has attached Bonni Cohen to direct and Sherman-Palladino and Palladino are producing it.

An independent documentary on the show titled Searching For Stars Hollow is concurrently in the works; Kelly Bishop, Jared Padalecki, Chad Michael Murray, and several other cast members are set to participate in the Ink On Paper Studios production.

Gilmore Girls premiered on the WB (which later became the CW) in 2000 and ran for seven seasons. The “ultimate fall TV show” follows mother-daughter duo Lorelai and Rory Gilmore (played by Graham and Alexis Bledel, respectively) as they navigated family, romance, and coming of age in the fictional Connecticut town Stars Hollow. Over its run, the cast featured actors Padalecki, Murray, Bishop, Melissa McCarthy, Milo Ventimiglia, Keiko Agena, Yanic Truesdale, and many more.

After Gilmore Girls, Sherman-Palladino went on to create the Emmy Award-winning comedy series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Even since its conclusion 19 years ago, Gilmore Girls maintains a dedicated fanbase. In 2016, Netflix released a four-part sequel miniseries titled Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, which followed the Gilmores a decade after the series’ original finale. The show is available to stream on Hulu/Disney+ and Prime Video.
