Less than a week after Nicolas Cage proclaimed that he’s starring in True Detective Season 5, HBO has confirmed the casting while adding that Antonio Banderas will also co-star.
HBO revealed the casting news in a teaser that revisited True Detective’s past seasons tandems — Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn, etc. — before announcing Cage and Banderas as the upcoming duo.

No other plot details about the fifth season were revealed other than the two characters’ names: Cage will play Henry Logan and Banderas will play Rai Garcia. As previously reported, the upcoming season will take place in Jamaica Bay, New York — far from Alaska’s perpetual nighttime in Season 4 — and will begin filming in 2027.

Cage himself perhaps hastened HBO’s announcement when he broke news at a Comic-Con panel last weekend about his involvement. “I think I’m probably gonna do another season of television. I think I might do a season of True Detective,” Cage said. “That’s okay that I’m the first to announce that, right?”
The casting wasn’t totally a surprise: As far back as August 2025, Cage was rumoured to star in True Detective Season 5. Similarly, rumours about Banderas joining the cast first surfaced late last year, The Hollywood Reporter wrote. Though both longtime Hollywood veterans, Cage and Banderas have never shared the screen together on any projects until now.
Issa Lopez, who wrote and served as showrunner on Season 4, dubbed True Detective: Night Country, is returning to those roles for the fifth season.
