Womb are heading in bright new directions with today’s release of “One Is Always Heading Somewhere.”
The delicate dream-pop track from the sibling trio at Flying Nun flows easily, inspired by a road trip through New Zealand’s North Island. With its gentle acoustic guitar melody and ethereal vocals, the restrained song reminds us that even in solitude, we’re still connected to the world around us.
“We wanted it to feel like a single sentence; or a single conversation, in which many thoughts all happen at once,” explains Womb vocalist Cello Forrester.
“The words ‘one is always heading somewhere’ took root from one of our favourite poems by Ocean Vuong, ‘Someday I’ll Love Ocean Vuong.’ The lines go: ‘The most beautiful part of your body / is where it’s headed and remember, / loneliness is still time spent / with the world.’”
The video, shot by Freya Finch, features fittingly simple lo-fi visuals, with sunlight streaming through a Tāmaki Makaurau park.
Womb have also announced a tour to celebrate their new single, visiting Lyttelton, Wellington, and their new hometown of Auckland. Womb will perform at Vogelmorn Upstairs in Wellington on Friday, October 11th, followed by a show at Audio Foundation in Auckland on Saturday, October 26th, and then take the stage at Lyttelton Coffee Company in Lyttelton on Saturday, November 2nd.
Womb started in 2015 and includes Cello Forrester (vocals, guitar, strings), Haz Forrester (synth, guitar), and Georgette Brown (drums). The band began in Wellington and makes dream-pop music that focuses on storytelling and queer experiences. Being siblings and twins helps shape their shared vision. Music has always been important to them as they grew up in rural Australia and the American Midwest.
Since forming, Womb have released several works, including their self-titled Womb EP in 2015, their first album Like Splitting the Head from the Body in 2018, their second EP Holding a Flame on Flying Nun Records in 2021, and their second album Dreaming of the Future Again in 2022.
Womb’s “One Is Always Heading Somewhere” is out now via Flying Nun Records.
