Delta Goodrem is a hot favourite to win this year’s Eurovision, and the Sydney-born singer is ready to take Australia to its first-ever victory at the annual song contest.

Goodrem’s first performance is set for 5am AEST tomorrow morning (May 15th), where she will perform her new track “Eclipse”, which will also feature on her newly announced album, Pure.

The closest Australia ever came to taking out the Eurovision Song Contest came in 2016 through Dami Im, who finished in second place. But appearing on a recent episode of the Rolling Stone Uncut podcast, Goodrem seems confident to go one better.

“We’ll give it a good go!” she said.

“To have everyone come together for an iconic [event]… where you’ve had ABBA, Celine Dion, Olivia Newton-John, Måneskin, just phenomenal artists that have been a part of music all these years, for me, in other moments it might not have been right. In this moment, I was like… what a blessing to be able to have that moment in time to go up there.

“But I’m so grateful, and it’s an amazing special moment.”

In the same episode, Goodrem recounted how the opportunity to represent Australia at Eurovision came to be, calling it “perfect timing”.

“I had sort of been circled with Eurovision for a few years, where people would sort of come and say, ‘Would you do it?’” she said.

“I was either on a show, a tour or a project, and I was in London last year, and we had a couple of headline shows at Hackney and Eurovision was on. I was backstage at my show, and this gentleman from the Sun paper had asked, ‘Would you ever do Eurovision? I’m like, ‘I’m always open-hearted, ‘I’m always open… if timing aligns then let’s talk about it. Then there was this sort of double page article that had said I was going to Eurovision!

“When I got back to Australia [last] November, and the lovely team came into my office and talked about it, I said I’m actually going into a lockdown of making my new album… I said yes, and I said ‘I’m gonna go into the studio and I’ll make sure we have the song that I feel represents me in this moment.’”

Earlier this week, the multi-ARIA Award-winning artist announced her eighth studio album, Pure, her first with major label Universal Music after departing Sony Music Australia in 2023.

“I am so excited to be stepping into this new chapter and joining forces with Universal Music,” Goodrem said.

“It marks the beginning of a powerful new home for ATLED Records – something I am incredibly proud of – and I can’t wait to share what we create together.”

The Eurovision Song Contest airs from 13-17 May exclusively on SBS and SBS On Demand.
