North Carolina rock band Wednesday are heading back to Australia this May and June, bringing their explosive live show to Melbourne and Sydney in support of their acclaimed new album Bleeds.

Led by songwriter Karly Hartzman, the band will play two nights at RISING Melbourne at Max Watts on May 31st and June 1st before a Sydney headline show at Metro Theatre on June 3rd. The shows are presented by Mistletone, with tickets going on sale for Sydney this Friday and Melbourne next week.

The shows continue their run across the Tasman, with Wednesday already announcing a return to Aotearoa for shows in Wellington, Lyttelton, and Auckland in May, presented by Banished Music and Strange News.

Wednesday have steadily built a reputation as one of the most compelling bands in modern American rock. Their sound blends Southern grit with noisy indie textures and sharp-eyed storytelling — a style that places Hartzman’s vivid, place-rooted lyrics at the centre of the chaos.

The band are touring in support of Bleeds, their widely praised 2025 album that many critics have hailed as a career high. If 2023’s Rat Saw God introduced Wednesday to a wider audience, Bleeds confirmed them as one of the defining rock bands of the moment.

Reviews were glowing across the board. “Rock records don’t come much better than this,” wrote NME, while Pitchfork awarded the album an 8.7 rating, praising Hartzman’s songwriting and the band’s tightly coiled performances. NPR declared it “the rock album of the year,” and The Guardian called it “the year’s best alt-rock album.”

The record showcases the full range of Wednesday’s sound: country storytelling, indie-pop melody, and walls of distorted guitar. Hartzman’s voice sits at the centre of it all, whether she’s nostalgically romanticising pickled eggs on the twangy “Elderberry Wine” or delivering the biting resentment of “Townies”.

That emotional intensity has translated into a formidable live reputation. Australian audiences first experienced it during Wednesday’s 2024 debut visit, where the band drew strong crowds at festivals including Golden Plains, MONA FOMA, and Perth Festival, alongside sweaty club shows that quickly developed a cult following.

Since then, Wednesday’s audience has only grown. The band recently sold out London’s 3,000-capacity Roundhouse, with The Times hailing the show as “a five-star example of the US crank rock invasion.”

Their return to Australia promises the same mix of ragged noise, emotional catharsis, and communal energy that has become the band’s calling card.

Support across the Australian run will come from Alien Nosejob (May 31st), Season 2 (June 1st), and Naaki Soul (June 3rd).
