Two people are dead and six were injured in a mass shooting at an unsanctioned warehouse party in downtown Los Angeles.
According to a statement from the LAPD, the shooting occurred at around 1 a.m. this morning at the 1100 block of 14th Place, an industrial area by the 10 Freeway. Officers arrived on the scene after receiving calls of shots being fired. A large crowd had gathered by the time the police arrived and found eight victims.
The two deceased victims have been identified only as a man and a woman. The man died at the scene, while the woman succumbed to her injuries at a hospital. Of the six people injured, at least one remains in critical condition.
No arrests have been made, nor have police publicly identified any suspects. A law enforcement source told the Los Angeles Times that the warehouse party was part of a local gang’s “hood day” celebration.
Initial reports suggested that the warehouse party was promoting itself on social media as an afterparty for Hard Summer, an EDM fest that had also taken place in Los Angeles over the weekend. A rep for Hard confirmed the festival had “zero affiliation” with the warehouse party.
The warehouse party was also not affiliated with an unofficial Hard afterparty, which happened to be taking place nearby that same night. Organizers of that event, Framed, wrote on social media: “The incident occurred at a completely separate hip-hop event that had been shut down and escalated independently. Unfortunately, some early news reports inaccurately associated our event due to event listings. Let us be absolutely clear: everyone at our event was safe, and our team ensured a secure environment from start to finish. We’ve been in communication with local media, and corrections to the story are already being made.”
Notably, a few hours before the shooting, police were called to the same block to shut down a party after receiving reports that someone had a gun. Officers did detain one person for possessing a firearm, and the party was shut down. It’s unclear if the two incidents are linked.
