As the wait for their new album dwindles down to single figures, Melbourne’s Tropical Fuck Storm have shared a new single, unveiling the audio and video for latest track “Bumma Sanger”.
Appearing just weeks after the release of “New Romeo Agent”, the noisy new track feels like a perfect response to the events of the last 18 months, with frontman Gareth Liddiard freely admitting in the lyrics that it was “supposed to be a summer banger, but now it’s just another bumma sanger“. Meanwhile, references to cabin fever and the free reign of germs and disease turn it into a truly reactionary statement in regards to the world as we know it.
“You can’t go anywhere or do anything during a lockdown but I was watching TV during a seance with Winston Churchill and an advert made by an interstellar travel agency came on offering an affordable holiday to a tropical beachside resort on a planet in a different galaxy,” explained Liddiard in an accompanying statement.
Meanwhile, the single’s accompanying Oscar O’Shea-directed clip features animation from Georgia Lucy and adds context to the lyrics, with Liddiard seen sat at home, being attended to by doctors, and surviving the miasmatic minutiae of modern life while “the bad news channel’s on a fucking roll“.
Or if you need it described by the band themselves, the clip sees Tropical Fuck Storm “travel to a beautiful tropical planet paradise where they encounter zodiac playboys, a telepathic pakicetus and various other heavenly bodies.”
“Bumma Sanger follows on from the likes of previous singles “New Romeo Agent” and “G.A.F.F.”, which in turn were preceded by 2020 singles “Suburbiopia” and “Legal Ghost”, and arrives just a month after the announcement of the group’s album launch tour.
