Close to a year from its inaugural edition, triple j Unearthed have announced the return of their DIY Supergroup.

Launched in April of 2020, the first DIY Supergroup emerged as a way to give artists the chance to collaborate from the confines of their own homes. Providing budding artists with stems and samples from  Tame Impala, Tash Sultana, Tkay Maidza, G Flip, Flume, and more, the prompt was for artists to create a track using these provided sounds, effectively making some of the biggest names in Aussie music take part in a… DIY supergroup.

Back in June, it was revealed that the winner of the competition was anonymous Sydney producer ROYBOY, whose tune “switchUP” caught the attention of music fans from all over.

“The way we went about it was very experimental and we didn’t know what it would end up sounding like,” the mysterious musician explained upon their win. “But by the time we ended up uploading it we sorta just crossed our fingers and we were like ‘we had fun making it so whatever happens happens’ and yeah… here we are!”

“They’ve used elements from some of Australia’s biggest names but done it in a way that feels wholly their own and the end result is a destructive alley oop of a track,” added triple j Unearthed Music Director Dave Ruby Howe.

Now, triple j Unearthed’s DIY Supergroup is back for another year, with the likes of Gang of Youths, Lime Cordiale, Alison Wonderland, Genesis Owusu, San Cisco, Vallis Alps, and Touch Sensitive all sharing brand new samples, stems, and loops for artists to do with what they like.

As per last year, artists are encouraged to visit the triple j Unearthed web page to download the sample pack, create a track using at least three of the artists included therein, and upload their creation to the site by Midnight on Sunday, May 9th. Full details are available via the triple j Unearthed website, with winners set to be announced on triple j Breakfast on May 17th.
