With just over a day to go until the Hottest 100 of 2020 kicks off, triple j have kept up their annual tradition of providing listeners and music fans with an insight into this year’s countdown.
Following the closing of voting earlier this week, the triple j Hottest 100 of 2020 is set to kick off at 12pm AEDT on Saturday, January 23rd. With much of 2020 being disrupted by a global pandemic, the result was a litany of artists hunkering down and emerging with some of the finest compositions of their career.
As such, tomorrow’s countdown is on track to be a hotly contested one. In fact, the station revealed just last week that only 350 votes separated the top two positions. While it’s not quite as close as the infamous 2007 countdown, it’s likely the closest it’s been since.
Now though, triple j have unveiled a few key statistics about the 2020 countdown, kicking things off with the fact that this year will see 66 entries from Australian artists – equalling a record set in 2016.
Meanwhile, the ‘hottest month’ (the month which resulted in the most entries into the countdown) was January of 2020 – mere weeks before the COVID pandemic truly took hold.
26 artists make their Hottest 100 debut, while two artists appear for their seventh consecutive year, and six others celebrate their fourth consecutive run. Lastly, three artists manage to appear with back-to-back songs in the countdown.
While it remains to be seen just who will take out the top spot in the forthcoming Hottest 100, half the fun is in the journey that gets us there. To take part in the festivities, be sure to tune into triple j from 12pm AEDT on Saturday, January 23rd and listen to the Hottest 100 of 2020.
