A personal number written about a “large loss of someone/something”, ‘Eyes Don’t Lie’ serves as Tones and I’s first single of 2022.

As Tones and I looks ahead to her second album, the chart-topping Aussie artist has unveiled her latest single, “Eyes Don’t Lie”.

Releasing her long-awaited debut album, Welcome to The Madhouse, back in July, Tones explained to triple j earlier this year that she’s already working on her second full-length release, with plans to release the record as soon as August.

“I’ve already started this next album that’s coming out in August; it’s very different,” she explained. “I kind of just told my managers when I started writing it when I was overseas. I was like, ‘I have to put this out’. I need to put it out quick because otherwise I’ll get sick of it. So I just told my managers, ‘I’m dropping an album’.”

Now, Tones and I has given fans what ostensibly could be the first taste of this forthcoming record, sharing “Eyes Don’t Lie” today.

A slick, powerful track with a tropical-sounding beat and Tones’ iconic vocals powering through its unifying chorus, “Eyes Don’t Lie” might be a track that has all the hallmarks of an anthemic single, yet its origins lie within a much more personal place.

“‘Eyes Don’t Lie’ is written about a large loss of someone/something,” explains Tones. “Resenting the person/feeling you get and realising it was a toxic person/feeling all along.

“Someone taking advantage of you and you taking advantage of yourself. Feeling better off and putting that last bit of bitterness behind you,” she adds. “The music video reflects being alone, but not lonely. Escaping something that hurt and happy to be wherever else, even though it’s over. I am still reflecting and telling my story one last time, before I move on.”

As referenced by Tones, the track also comes accompanied by a music video which helps to contextualise the message of the track. Directed by Tones and I alongside Nick Kozakis and Liam Kelly, the video was filmed in locations near Newcastle and Adelaide and asserts itself as one of Tones’ most powerful clips to date.
