Tones And I used her recent set at the Melbourne leg of the Laneway Festival to share the story about the inspirations of her catchy new song, “You’re So Fucking Cool”.

For months now, Tones And I has been serving as one of the best-known Australian musicians in the world thanks to the runaway success of her chart-topping single, “Dance Monkey”. In addition to breaking chart records, hitting number one around the world, finding a fan in Elton John, and recently being recognised for hitting a billion streams, it’s safe to say that Toni Watson is something of an Aussie success story.

Currently travelling around the country on the Laneway Festival lineup, Tones And I appeared before a hometown crowd in Melbourne yesterday, serving up a set full of hits, covers, and unreleased tunes. One of these aforementioned tunes, “You’re So Fucking Cool”, sees Tones at her bouncy best, featuring a slick bass line and a foul-mouthed chorus.

Undoubtedly set to be a huge hit upon its release, the artist has been prefacing performances of the track with an extended speech about the American experience that inspired the track.

“So, I have a song that I’m about to release and I haven’t shown anybody yet,” Tones explained to the crowd mid-way through her set on Saturday. “This song is about story from when I went to LA.

“When I was there, this big producer said to me, “Hey Tones, do you want to sing on a track?’ And I said, ‘No, that’s okay, Australians pride themselves on rock and roll and writing their own music’.

“He said, ‘that’s okay, do you want to come to a house party?’, and I was like, ‘Shit yeah!’ So me and my friend, Abbie, she’s from Sheffield and she’s ratchet and I’m a bogan, so together weren’t made for LA house parties. So we went anyway, and no one really spoke to us, and it was like they’d much rather just speak to each other.

“One girl came up to me and she said, ‘I’m from the TV show Teen Wolf, I don’t know if you’ve heard of it.’ And I said to her, ‘I’ve never seen the show, but I am sure you are terrific.’ Other than that they didn’t really speak to us, so after 45 minutes we got an Uber, went back to the hotel, got Uber Eats and watched Netflix.

“Then I wrote a song about it the next day, and it’s called “You’re So Fucking Cool”.”

At this stage, there’s no word yet as to when Tones And I is looking to release her new single, though given the reception it received during her recent festival slot, it looks set to be another massive tune for the young artist.

Tones also closed out her set by telling her fans she would see them in May, indicating that the single could be be released prior to what is ostensibly another headline tour from the artist.
