Tkay Maidza has returned with her latest single for 2021, offering up the energetic bass-heavy banger that is “Syrup”.
Released this morning, “Syrup” sees Tkay at her resounding best, pairing her razor-sharp lyrics and fiery performance style with a buzzing bassline that not only commands, but deserves your attention.
“I just wanna be rich… thick… sweet… sick,” Tkay proclaims on the track, showcasing a lyrical prowess that is commonly understated by most members of the public.
“The common misconception is that I’m not as deep as I am,” she explained to Rolling Stone recently. “Because I’m very colourful. A lot of it is image-based as well. So I can be confused as, ‘Oh it’s an Instagram influencer making music’ kind of vibe.”
“Syrup” serves as the third track to be released by Tkay Maidza in 2021, following on from the Yung Baby Tate-featuring “Kim”, released back in February, and her cover of the Pixies’ “Where is My Mind?” for the 4AD covers compilation, Bills and Aches and Blues.
Tkay Maidza most recently released a larger body of work by way of 2020’s Last Year Was Weird (Vol. 2) EP, which took home the Best Record at last week’s inaugural Rolling Stone Australia Awards in Sydney.
While it’s currently unknown when the third and final part of the trilogy of EPs is set to arrive, more information – including whether “Syrup” and “Kim” are set to feature on the tracklist – will ostensibly be released in the coming months.
Tkay Maida’s “Syrup” is out now via 4AD/Dew Process.
