He’s been one of the most recognisable musicians and comedians in the country for close to 20 years, but now the mighty Tim Minchin is set to finally release his debut album.
Having risen to fame thanks to his renowned live performances and exceptional musical abilities, Minchin has long been a household name not just on Australian shores, but abroad as well. In addition to appearances at comedy festivals around the world, Minchin’s work has been seen on TV, film, and even Broadway, thanks to his work on Matilda the Musical and Groundhog Day.
However, after years of well-received live albums, Minchin is finally set to release his debut studio album via BMG, announcing the news earlier today.
“I’ve been writing songs for 35 years, and have never released a studio album. Too many distractions,” Minchin noted. “Signing with BMG has given me focus, and the confidence to aim for a record that isn’t defined by anyone else’s expectations. I’m loving the freedom, loving the process, and loving the team at BMG. They’re cool and nice.”
Though no release date has been shared as yet, the album’s first single – “Leaving LA” – is set to be released on March 13th. However, with a number of tour dates this month, fans will likely get a chance to hear unreleased cuts from the new record before the general public.
This tour follows a recently-announced appearance on the Splendour in the Grass lineup, and the success of last year’s BACK tour, which included over 75 dates and sold 180,000 tickets.
“Tim Minchin is the rarest of talents – an incredible pianist, composer, playwright, actor and lyricist, amongst many other things,” BMG Australia Managing Director Heath Johns said of Minchin’s signing.
“To have Tim sign his first ever record deal with BMG is a genuine honour for our entire team and a further indication that BMG is the destination for artists with international ambition and a demand to maintain creative control and ownership of their recordings. I know the world will fall in love with this absolute gem of a pop record and we can’t wait to help Tim share these songs.”
While no information regarding the album’s tracklist has been shared as yet, many fans might recall the success of Minchin’s “Come Home (Cardinal Pell)”, which reached #11 on the ARIA charts in 2016, received a nomination for the APRA Song of the Year in 2017, and likely gives an indication of his forthcoming success.
