Thelma Plum has provided fans with a rather special song, sharing a cover of the Powderfinger classic “These Days” as part of the new CBA We Can. Together. campaign.
First released back in 1998 as the B-side to their track “Passenger”, Powderfinger’s “These Days” was famously featured on the soundtrack to the Gregor Jordan film Two Hands.
Becoming a firm favourite in no time, the track eventually hit the #1 position in the triple j Hottest 100 of that year, becoming the first of two times Powderfinger would top the poll, and the first of three top spots for frontman Bernard Fanning.
In addition to being the final song performed by the Brisbane outfit prior to their breakup in 2010, it was also track performed during last week’s “One Night Lonely” livestream, which saw the group perform together (sort of) for the first time in close to a decade.
Now, the time seems perfect for the release of Thelma Plum’s cover of the track, which soundtracks the CBA We Can. Together. campaign as it highlights Australians coming together during trying times.
“I was given the chance to record a song I grew up with, and as a Brissie local, I already know a couple of the Powderfinger guys so of course, I said yes,” Plum explained of the cover.
“I even recorded parts of it in Ian’s (Haug, Powderfinger guitarist) studio, which made it feel even more natural.”
While Plum had a national tour planned to kick off this evening, the current COVID-19 pandemic has seen these shows postponed until November, with new dates being announced today.
Meanwhile, Thelma Plum is gearing up to share new music later this year, telling Rolling Stone earlier this year that a new record is already in the works.
“I’m half already started [writing songs], and very much immersed in that process at the moment,” she explained. “I’ve been writing a lot for my next record, and have songs ready for it. So yeah, try to stop me.”
