Almost a week on from the release of their latest album, Melbourne icons The Avalanches have announced their return to the live stage, revealing details of a hometown headline date for 2021.
Set to take place at Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Friday, April 23rd, the show will serve as the group’s first headline date in a few years, with DJ sets predominantly occupying their live calendar in previous years.
Speaking to Rolling Stone recently, the pair explained how their new album, We Will Always Love You, was not only scheduled to be released much earlier in 2020, but was also set to be accompanied by a run of live dates to promote it.
“We were hoping to get the record out in May and tour through Europe,” explained Robbie Chater of the year that has been. “That’s how we make a living, so it’s been tough.”
Thankfully, COVID restrictions have eased enough for live music to make a cautious return, with The Avalanches now announcing their first live date following the new album’s release. Set to be held in accordance with COVID-safe measures, the show will allow punters the chance to purchase tickets in groups of two, four, or six, with passes available to private decks, stall tables, and balcony seats.
The show will also see The Avalanches joined by a handful of “special guests”, though no details regarding their identities have been revealed as yet. Considering the number of guest musicians on their latest record, it’s likely – but unconfirmed – that the show will be performed in a manner similar to their 2017 Wildflower tour, which saw the group accompanied by Spank Rock and Eliza Wolfgramm.
