Hours after Miley Cyrus announced she would no longer be performing at this weekend’s World Tour Bushfire Relief event, the show’s Australian promoter has revealed the event has now been axed.
As one of the latest bushfire benefit performances announced, the World Tour Bushfire Relief first revealed its details in late February, with TEG Dainty, Apollo World Touring, and Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith’s Westbrook Inc. all working behind the scenes to put it together.
Set to take place on Friday, March 13th at Melbourne’s Lakeside Stadium, Cyrus was to be joined by the likes of country-rap chart-topper Lil Nas X, The Veronicas, and DJ Seb Fontaine on the lineup.
However, as events are either postponed or cancelled around the world due to the rising threat of coronavirus, it was revealed yesterday that Cyrus’ Australian appearance had become the latest casualty.
“Due to the recommendations of local, state, federal and international government authorities, including the Center for Disease Control, to reduce potential health risks in response to the current global health crisis, we are no longer travelling to Australia for the show,” Cyrus wrote on Facebook.
“I am so disappointed to not be there, but I have to do what is right to protect the health and safety of my band and crew. I will still be making a donation to help the victims of the Australian bush fire. I’m sorry to miss everyone in Australia, but I will be back soon.”
At the time, little information was revealed in regards to whether the event would still go on without its headliner, or if the entire show would be cancelled. Meanwhile, questions were raised about whether Robbie Williams – who is set to play another World Tour concert in Melbourne the following night – would still appear in the country.
Now, TEG Dainty have taken to social media to reveal the Bushfire Relief event has been cancelled.
“World Tour Melbourne are very sad to confirm Miley Cyrus’ recent announcement that she will not be travelling to Melbourne and that as a result the World Tour Bushfire Relief concert at Lakeside Stadium on Friday 13th March can no longer go ahead,” TEG Dainty wrote. “All fans will receive a full refund and will be contacted by Ticketek shortly.
“World Tour’s Saturday night show with Robbie Williams will still be going ahead, and we look forward to bringing Melbourne a fantastic night of entertainment. Robbie is already on his way to Australia.”
At this stage, it’s unclear when or if Miley Cyrus will return to Australian shores, where it has currently been close to six years since her last headline tour.
