Tame Impala has released a new single, “Wings of Time”, an original song written for the new fantasy film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which arrives in Australian cinemas on Thursday, March 30th.
For Kevin Parker, the opportunity to appear on the soundtrack was simply too good to turn down. “Being asked to do a track for the D&D soundtrack seemed like an unmissable opportunity to indulge in my long time love of fantasy prog rock,” he explains.
After deciding to take on the challenge, Parker asked his friend, Pond frontman Nicholas Allbrook, to help him out, as Allbrook “is the person I know appreciates this subject matter the most.”
“We rented a villa in Spain, that kind of felt like a castle, for two nights whilst on tour for Primavera. That location got us in the right frame of mind and it went from there. We stayed up late coming up with weird ideas and song lyrics,” he adds.
It’s not the first big-budget film Parker has created music for: last year, Tame Impala’s collaborative song with Diana Ross, “Turn Up the Sunshine”, featured on the Minions: Rise of the Gru soundtrack, while Tame Impala remixed “Edge of Reality” for Baz Luhrmann’s biopic Elvis.
Starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, and Regé-Jean Page, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is based on the famous tabletop role-playing game of the same name. The upcoming film has no connection to the previous film trilogy based on the game released between 2000 and 2012.
In other Tame Impala news, they’re preparing for a special release to mark the 10-year anniversary of Lonerism. Following the album’s 10th anniversary late last year, Tame Impala will release the Lonerism 10 Year Anniversary Box Set on May 26th, which will mark the time the band performed the album in full at the California festival Desert Daze.
Tame Impala’s “Wings of Time” is out now via Virgin Music Australia.
