Organisers of a popular Sydney live music series have come out swinging following news that the event has been dumped from its home of three years.

On Thursday, Astral People announced that its Summer Dance series, which has hosted the likes of Skrillex, Honey Dijon and Four Tet over the years, will be moved on from its home at Liberty Hall Courts in the Entertainment Quarter in 2027 in favour of permanent padel courts.

The news is another blow for Sydney’s live music and culture scene, which recently saw new live space, Divine Playhouse, shut down only days after opening.

Organisers have been quick to act, confirming that the Summer Dance series will move to Marrickville’s Saywell Street next year.

“After years of bringing people together through music and events, our home at Liberty Hall Courts is being replaced by permanent padel courts. There’s a world where we can all coexist, but losing this venue shows how little value is placed on cultural spaces in Sydney,” Astral People Director, Vichara Edirisinghe, told Rolling Stone AU/NZ.

“Spaces for music and nightlife keep disappearing, and that makes it harder to keep Sydney the thriving cultural city its people deserve. We’re now looking forward to the future and keeping the dance going in Marrickville.”

Rolling Stone AU/NZ has contacted the Entertainment Quarter for comment.
