Splendour in the Grass is set to hold its 20th anniversary celebrations one year later than planned, with organisers today revealing the festival’s next event will be pushed back to 2021.
First announcing its 2020 lineup back in February, Splendour organisers revealed they were going all out for their 20th anniversary edition, with the likes of Flume, The Strokes, and Tyler, The Creator all signing on for the iconic festival’s sold-out event.
Although the festival soon received (and subsequently responded to) criticism of a lack of gender diversity on the bill, any complaints soon fell by the wayside when the global COVID-19 pandemic saw the festival’s upcoming platinum celebration officially pushed back to October.
While the headline acts were announced to be the same, the full lineup was set to be released sometime in the near future, despite claims from industry heavyweights such as Michael Chugg, who labelled the festival’s plan to continue in October as “ambitious”.
Now, it appears as though the reality and complications of holding a festival in the wake of a global pandemic have truly been realised, with organisers today revealing that Splendour in the Grass will be taking the year off, focusing instead on holding its next event in 2021.
In a statement sent out today, Splendour in the Grass Co-Producers Jessica Ducrou and Paul Piticco announced that “with a heavy heart and after a great deal of consideration, Splendour in the Grass will move the 20th Anniversary event forward to July 2021.”
“Like most we have been monitoring the situation closely for the past few months and while Australia is now moving into the recovery phase, there is no timeline yet around the opening of international borders,” the statement continued.
“As a result, and with our audience interests front and centre, we must announce the reschedule to 2021.”
Now set to take place between July 23rd and 25th in 2021, Splendour in the Grass have revealed they will be offering refunds to any ticketholders who may need their funds returned to them, but are otherwise encouraging their audience to hold onto their tickets for the following year.
At this stage, details regarding the festival’s lineup are unclear, and will likely be announced within the following months. However, organisers have noted they have intentions of keeping the bill as close to their original plans as possible, meaning that there’s a chance of the same lineup taking place, just one year later than first intended.
More details about the festival’s rescheduled plans will be available through the Splendour in the Grass website.
