It seems Splendour in the Grass are kicking things off early for their 20th anniversary event, announcing that this year’s lineup will be arriving next week.
For most Australian music fans, it doesn’t feel like it’s been 20 years since Powderfinger headlined the inaugural Splendour in the Grass festival back in 2001.
However, in just two short decades, the event has managed to continuously grow, going from a one-day affair to a three-day bucket list item which in 2019 boasted huge names like Tame Impala, Childish Gambino, and Chance the Rapper (well, almost).
Traditionally, it’s usually around April that fans start to look towards July with a sense of excitement, with organisers choosing to release the year’s initial lineup around that time. This year though, it seems the 20th anniversary celebrations have brought things forward a bit, with the first artist announcement dropping just next week.
Revealing the news this morning, Splendour have told us mark Wednesday, February 19 in our diaries, with the all-important list of artists arriving via their website and triple j.
In addition to all this, the festival has also revealed that the world-renowned Berlin-based Australian artist Lucy Dyson will be serving as the festival’s 2020 Artist in Residence.
With her collages described as being “beautifully detailed, unique and off-beat” by the likes of Gotye, her work being exhibited in major galleries, museums, and arts festivals around the world, and having created works for the likes of Beyoncé, Courtney Barnett, Paul Kelly, and more, Splendour in the Grass have undoubtedly snagged a giant in the world of creative arts for this year’s event.
Of course, the burning question on everyone’s lips now relates to just who will be topping the bill for Splendour’s 20th edition. Could we see Powderfinger reuniting to headline the fest, 20 years after they first did so? Could Eddy Current Suppression Ring’s return see them nab a must-see spot?
Sadly, the only thing we know for sure so far is that the mighty Rage Against the Machine won’t be headlining any of the nights, with Splendour organisers recently revealing that, despite their best efforts, they were unable to snag the reformed political rockers.
All will be revealed on Wednesday, February 19 though, so keep your eyes peeled for what is bound to be one of the biggest festival lineup announcements you’ll see all year.
Splendour in the Grass is set to take place at the North Byron Parklands from Friday, July 24 until Sunday, July 26, while tickets will go on sale from Thursday, February 27, with payment plans available once again.
