One of Australia’s most beloved indie-folk outfits have returned, with Tinpan Orange sharing the gorgeous “Turn It On Again” ahead of its official release this week.

Having curated a reputation as one one of the most revered outfits on the Australian music scene, Tinpan Orange – consisting of Emily and Jesse Lubitz on vocals and guitar, and Alex Burkoy on violin – have kept a little more quiet than usual since the release of their last album, 2016’s stunning Love Is a Dog.

While a couple of singles appeared in 2018, fans have been waiting a couple of years to hear new music from the acclaimed trio, with “Turn It On Again” set to end that musical drought. A breezy, melodic number with a dazzling rhythm section and soaring vocals, the track showcases exactly what it is that have made them a favourite of legions of fans as it explores themes of letting go, hope, and rebirth.

Springing to life earlier in 2020, the story of “Turn It On Again” goes back to a few weeks before COVID-19 lockdowns hit the world, when the group entered their home studio in the hinterland of New South Wales’ Northern Rivers to record a new EP.

“I originally wrote this song about the power of shutting down in order to come back with vitality and a new focus,” Emily explained of the new track. “It’s my only technique for fixing technological problems made into a metaphor for relationships.

“The shutting down of the COVID world has given the song an eerie new relevance.”

Serving as the first taste of their new collection of songs, “Turn It On Again” is set to be officially released on July 31st. While Tinpan Orange – like most of the world – have been sidelined due to the prevalence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the group’s livestreamed performances with the likes of Isol-Aid have helped to tide fans over while they anxiously away their return to the live stage.

Tinpan Orange’s “Turn It On Again” is released via Ditto on July 31st, with pre-saves available now.
