It often feels difficult for an artist to effectively blend sadness with exuberant happiness, but that’s exactly what sad alex has managed to do, with new single “crydancing”, taken from her recent EP of the same name.

Having been making music for a few years, sad alex recently found herself as something of a viral sensation thanks to her 2021 single “itbc”, which managed to reach over 20 million views on TikTok. With fans undoubtedly flocking to the artist’s mesmerising sound and effortlessly relatable lyrics, it’s no surprise that her latest EP has been garnering acclaim across the board.

Already a renowned songwriter for big names such as Jordin Sparks and Kelly Rowland, sad alex might describe herself as “the happiest sad girl you ever met”, but her music clearly hides a sense of positivity that radiates from sadness.

With the crydancing EP described as a “mixtape for mixed emotions”, both it and its title track more than live up to this label, with its blend of emotions leaving you unsure whether you should be dancing or leaning into the sadness. However, through its slick instrumentation, smooth production, and hazy nature, “crydancing” becomes more anthemic by the second, leaving you to realise that even when sadness reigns, there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel, and a reason to dance.

“There are few things I love more than a good cry,” explained sad alex. “Maybe a good turkey sandwich. But, I really believe it is important to let yourself feel everything – the good, the bad, the highs, the lows.

“You can’t get to the other peak without going through the valley first. There is a way to make empowerment out of sadness, and this song was my expression of that.”

Truly, they’re words to live by, and “crydancing” is the soundtrack to overcoming the adversity and relishing in the peaks that are set to follow.
