Following his showcases at Bigsound last month — featuring a surprise performance with Nik from Death by Denim to perform the drum and bass remix of “Cigarettes & Honey” — Roy Bing has released his latest earworm collaboration.
“Met Someone” kicks off with a simple plucking guitar line before it builds into a hyper-pop ballad of mega proportions.
Banoffee‘s distorted vocal processing, tinkering synths and her breathy echoing accompaniments are enough to make the single stand out. But Roy Bing, the songwriter and producer who studied at Berklee College of Music, elevates it to another level with his production.
“It’s about not wanting to grow up,” he said of the track, “while looking back on a period with a different perspective. Working with Banoffee on ‘Met Someone’ was a trip – she’s such a dope artist with a voice that’s out of this world. She crushed it.”
Roy Bing teamed up with Banoffee (real name Martha Brown) when she was in Australia for Splendour in the Grass in July.
“I loved the melody so much I got him to come pick me up from my hotel and we made it in the morning on my only day off,” she said. “This song has a special place in me because it’s so beautifully melancholy and cryptic which is essentially how my brain works. It’s a kind love that is soaked in sadness. I feel very lucky to sing it.”
Roy Bing has been in a purple patch of late, his single “Dosey Does” featuring Olive Amun & BOI was added to spot rotation triple j, and was added to the New Music Fridays, Local List and Indie Arrivals playlists.
His single “Touched’ with Carla Wehbe and Tyron Hapi is pushing 10 million streams, and he’s recently been in the studio with acts like MAY-A, ASTON, and Nicole Millar.
