They’re an undeniable force on the Australian heavy music scene, but as RedHook get closer to the release of their debut EP, they’ve now shared the title track ahead of its official release on Friday.

Teaming up with Stevie Knight (Trophy Eyes, Stand Atlantic, Yours Truly) on production duties, and featuring James Paul Wisner (Hands Like Houses, Underoath) on mixing, “Bad Decisions” follows on from the release of November’s “Cure 4 Psycho”, which scored a spot in triple j’s rotation and received critical acclaim across the board.

Now, “Bad Decisions” sees the group furthering their reputation as one of the country’s most compelling bands, serving as a cathartic piece of alternative rock, which features the honest (often, uncomfortably so) lyrics of lead vocalist Emmy Mack, and gang vocals from members of Yours Truly, The Dead Love, Grenade Jumper, FANGZ, Down For Tomorrow, and The Last Martyr.

“I always joke to the boys that it’s my theme song,” Mack notes, describing the track as a “self-loathing anthem”.

“I wrote it when I was feeling depressed as fuck, trapped in a spiral of self-destructive behaviour and making a lot of *checks thesaurus* questionable life choices that only served to intensify my rubbish headspace and feelings of deep self-loathing.

“(‘Bad Decisions’) is me reflecting from rock bottom on how on earth I went from being a straight-edge, dux-of-my-Catholic-school goody-two-shoes to feeling like a totally lost and fucked up mess of an adult,” Mack adds. “It’s me laughing at myself and, I guess, trying to take something positive away from all it all. Hopefully someone else out there can relate.”

While “Bad Decisions” is officially released on Friday, ahead of the EP of the same name’s release in April, RedHook are set to wrap up a run of tour dates in February as part of their “Cure 4 Psycho” tour, including shows in Canberra, Newcastle, Wollongong, and an appearance at Brisbane’s The Other Festival this weekend alongside the likes of Cog and Wolf & Cub.

RedHook’s “Bad Decisions” is out tomorrow, while their Bad Decisions EP will be released on April 23rd.
