With her long-awaited debut album, Heavy Metal flower Petal, on the way, Phebe Starr has just unveiled one of the finest tracks we’ve seen yet, thanks to the delicate majesty of “Alphabet Soup”.
Fresh from releasing the immersive “DAFFODILS” back in May, Starr is undoubtedly gearing up to embark upon the biggest chapter in her career to date. With nods at the International Songwriting Competition, and lucrative synchs with major international brand and TV shows, and support slots with Of Monsters & Men, Elliphant, Vance Joy and more to her name, these last few years have been leading up to something truly special.
That special something is the release of her debut album, Heavy Metal flower Petal, which is currently slated for an October release. Now, Starr has offered up the latest taste of the record, with the immersive “Alphabet Soup” being released today.
Buoyed by Starr’s ethereal voice, and underpinned by sparse instrumentation, “Alphabet Soup” is the true definition of a slow-burner. As it grows in intensity, the listener is left wanting so much more, with even repeated plays unable to scratch the itch that this mesmerising track leaves you with.
Self-produced by Starr, the masterful composition evokes similarities between that of Lykke Li’s haunting melodies, or the richness of artists such as Stevie Nicks, while speaking to the power of the delicate moments in life that hold those moments of strength and, of course, power.
“It’s more important than ever that we find beauty in the mundane,” Starr explains. “I love how songs can take the most devastating moments and immortalise them into beauty.”
Accompanying the track is a nostalgic music video, which was directed, produced, and edited by Starr, and was filmed in her hometown of Valla Beach, on the mid-north coast of Australia, during isolation.
Phebe Starr’s “Alphabet Soup” is out now.
