Having released their latest album back in June, Melbourne rockers Immigrant Union have shared the latest video to accompany their work, with the clip to “Ahmed” arriving today.
A fixture of the local scene for more than a decade, Immigrant Union have long been celebrated as leaders of Melbourne’s world-class psych underground, boasting an acclaimed lineup that features The Dandy Warhols’ Brent DeBoer, Bob Harrow, and Peter Lubulwa, with previous members even including global export Courtney Barnett.
Releasing their third album, JUDAS, a few months back, Immigrant Union once again proved themselves as champions of the local scene, with tracks like “Soldier Field” and “Jewels in The Sky” showcasing their inimitable talents.
Their first record featuring relative newcomers Ben Street on bass and Paddy McGrath-Lester on drums, the whole record is an incredible listen, however, it’s their most recent single, “Ahmed”, that has been the subject of their latest music video treatment.
“‘Ahmed’ is the latest single from our new album JUDAS,” explains Harrow. “To help bring the single to life we collaborated with director and long time friend, Alexander Francis.
“Francis wrote up a killer treatment for the video that we loved immediately. He took our initial video idea of commentary on the trap of missing moments due to being submerged in the bullshit of one’s phone and extended on that beautifully. Ahmed, lyrically tells the story of a refugee trying to make their way to London. It also comments on ignorance surrounding the plights of refugees.
“‘Ahmed’ is a journey and Francis was able to take that journey and spin it into a journey of his own all the while allowing the themes of the song to breathe through his new creation.”
Show on location at Mitchelton Wines in the small Victorian town of Nagambie, the clip is a masterclass of visual brilliance, with intricate storytelling and a slick audio accompaniment turning it into what may be one of the group’s finest videos to date.
Immigrant Union’s “Ahmed” is available on their latest album, JUDAS, which is out now via Cheersquad Records & Tapes.
