New South Wales artist Hey! Astro looks primed to take the world of music by storm, with his recently-released debut single “Birthday” arriving as a stellar introduction for the young musician.
Hailing from the coastal town of Terrigal, Hey! Astro doesn’t exactly come from a place where slick beats and accomplished lyrics are the main attraction of its music scene, but he arrives to set himself apart from his contemporaries with his unique sound and creative method.
Better known to his friends as Owen Elepano, the young Filipino/Italian artist has been writing music since he was 13, with his creative process differing from most other artists. Finding beats on YouTube that are uploaded by young producers around the world, Elepano writes vocal melodies and lyrics over the top, crafting genre-shifting creations in the process.
With music spanning the genres of hip-hop, indie, and pop, and acts such as Juice WRLD, Dominic Fike, and Rex Orange Country serving as stylistic influences, no more can this combination of sounds be heard on debut single “Birthday”.
Released recently, the track sees Hey! Astro working with rising mixing engineer Sid Mallick (Juice WLRD, Doja Cat, One Four) for the breezy creation, which is paired by a slick video clip directed by Herbert Leota & Aaron Bull.
Though it’s only early days for Elepano and his Hey! Astro project, there’s plenty of gear on the way for the young artist, with more singles set to be released across the coming months in the lead-up to a debut mixtape.
