The Naarm-based rock duo Cry Club, comprised of Heather Riley and Jonathan Tooke, are back in playlist rotation territory with their latest single: “This, Forever”.
Described as a politically charged ‘tough love’ tune, the track is equal parts nostalgic and uplifting, with a rallying cry that lands just where it needs to in 2025’s culture; a year that’s seen division on every level, instead praising unity and loyalty to one another through thick and thin.
Riley, the lyricist of the pair, says the tune speaks to the ever-present push and pull feeling “of disagreeing with people you love about something you all care extremely deeply about”.
“Every person has their own idea of the exact right steps to take to combat injustice, and a hundred reasons on tap about why everyone else’s idea is garbage. Nobody is going to have the 100% perfect answer. What’s more important is how to get to the future we’re all searching for, and to remember we’re on the same team with a common enemy when faced with this overwhelming tide of conservative backlash against people like us”.
“In short, I guess the main message of the song is ‘I hear you, I know you’re scared, I’m scared too. I love you even when I’m mad at you, we’ll survive together because we have each other’”.
The spirit of the song is true to a core tenet of Cry Club, community and a DIY touch that adds a bit of human charm to every production, just like their recent singles “High Voltage Anxiety” and “For Your Health” both being recorded, engineered and produced in-house. The music video for “This, Forever” follows suit, and according to Riley is “a really satisfying culmination of a lot of my artistic inspirations”.
Cry Club have been hard at work over the last eighteen months, supporting The Darkness, WAAX and Stand Atlantic, but the duo has also announced tour dates for their ‘This, Forever’ Australia tour in November, with tickets on sale now.
