As New York City-based English musician Coyle Girelli gears up to the release of his second album, Funland, the acclaimed artist has offered fans a new single by way of “Here Comes My Baby”.

Having shared a handful of singles in recent months (including the likes of “Fun” and “From 7th Street with Love”) as the release of February’s Funland slowly creeps up, Girelli has found himself becoming more and more in-demand, with his songwriting even being utilised by the likes of global superstars BTS.

A powerful and passionate performer with a knack for stellar songwriting and a penchant for switching genres at the drop of a hat, Girelli’s Funland is undoubtedly shaping up to be a contender for record of the year, with “Here Comes My Baby” again giving fans an idea of what to expect.

A dreamy piece of dark indie-rock, “Here Comes My Baby” feels custom-made for the nu-shoegaze crowd, with Girelli’s voice presenting like a combination of Roy Orbison and Thom Yorke, filtered through a Mazzy Star lens. But “Here Comes My Baby” is in no way derivative, with the heart-rending track feeling as genuine as the moments that inspired it, albeit with influence from some iconic artists.

“‘Here Comes My Baby’ has a dreamy indie vibe that I loved living in as I created it,” Girelli explains. “Lyrically, it’s pretty simple… it’s about craving the body of a lover in an uncertain moment of strangeness.

“I had a running playlist that I listened to pretty much every day while I was writing and I think a lot of them influenced this track, and the album. Some of the main ones on there were Leonard Cohen, Nina Simone, Hamilton Leithauser, Cigarettes After Sex, The War on Drugs, Big Thief, and Bruce Springsteen.”

While his new album is set to arrive next month, Aussie listeners might be a little familiar with Girelli thanks to his appearance on Keli Holiday’s “Song Goes On”.

“I’ve known and worked with Adam and Rueben of Peking Duk for a few years now,” Girelli explains. “I’ve written a bunch of songs with them both and even toured with them as guest vocalist in the US and in Europe shortly before COVID lockdown.

“‘Song Goes On’ came out of one of those writing sessions and Adam and I continued to work on it for his Keli Holiday project. I love how it came out and am thrilled that it’s getting love in Australia and from triple j. Adam and I have been busy writing a lot more for Keli Holiday in the last few months. Some right tunes to come!”

Coyle Girelli’s “Here Comes My Baby” is released on January 12th, while Funland is officially released on February 25th, with pre-orders available now.
