As beloved Melbourne funk trio Cookin’ On 3 Burners gear up to release their first single of the year, they’ve given fans a sneak peak of their upcoming A-side, sharing “The World Is Cold” today.
Closing in on 25 years together as one of the country’s most revered and acclaimed outfits, Cookin’ On 3 Burners have been somewhat quiet over the last year or two, having last released an album by way of 2018’s Lab Experiments Vol. 2, which arrived just two years after they received global fame by way of French producer Kungs’ remix of “This Girl”.
Now though, they’ve emerged from a year on hold armed with a new 7″ single, which is set to arrive on Friday. Leading the A-side though is new track “The World Is Cold”, which sees the trio working with Melbourne rapper Mantra and vocalist Jane Tyrell as they trade off lyrics which drip with resonance and relevance, while Tyrell’s vocals add the sort of soulful element to it that only she can.
On the flip-side however, Cookin’ On 3 Burners have turned their attention to the classics, offering up an instrumental soul-funk interpolation of Mos Def’s 1999 classic “Ms. Fat Booty”, reimagining the track in the slick manner that fans have come to know and love.
The release of the new single comes following the group’s longest break in touring and recording in their musical history. Emerging from dark times with such an important and genuine track in an environment such as this only makes the group’s first release of the decade even more special.
“Through bushfires and a global pandemic, this new 45 has been a long time coming,” the group explain. “We are in love with the lyrical heat that this collab with Mantra and Jane Tyrell has brought to our sound. Excited to bring this smoking new Burners 7 inch vinyl to the people.”
Recorded and produced by the group themselves, the new single – comprising both “The World Is Cold” and their Mos Def rework – showcase the sort of classic vibe that the Cookin’ On 3 Burners team bring to everything they do, whether it be by way of their stunning musical output or their hunger for stunning collaborations.
“We keep it all live and full of vibe in the studio,” they explain. “The Cookin’ sound is about the collective funky web and embracing the gaps between the notes. It’s all real instruments played by people, recorded on ancient equipment and then given a buff for 2021!”
While it remains to be seen what 2022 will bring for the Cookin’ On 3 Burners team, new single “The World Is Cold” shows that even close to 25 years in the game, they’re still bringing the heat.
