Just a couple of months after the release of the Jack Newsome-featuring “F It ILY”, Aussie alt-pop artist Chymes has continued her stunning run of singles, with “Black Hole Friend” appearing recently.

A cathartic piece of dark-pop that is bolstered by slick instrumentation, subtle grooves, and Chymes’ gorgeous vocals, “Black Hole Friend” is effectively a a self-described “fuck you” to all of those that fall into the titular category.

“This song was so much fun to write,” explains Chymes. “It’s about that one friend who is so beyond toxic they are just a huge black hole that sucks all your energy out and leaves you with nothing. I’ve had so many ‘black hole’ friendships that were awful, manipulative, needy and probably narcissistic, so it was so therapeutic to finally say a big f*** you to all the bitches who hurt me.

“It hurts so much when you’ve poured all your love and energy into someone, never get anything in return, and in the end, they stab you in the back. This song really goes through that realisation period and ends up in a euphoric, fun chant ‘here’s to my black hole friend, you’ll never see me again!’ I love it.”

In addition to the track, “Black Hole Friend” also comes accompanied by a smooth visual, directed by Sophia de Vries, which sees a defiant Chymes performing the track with the sort of self-assured confidence that assures any of these ‘black hole friends’ that she’s living her best life.

“Black Hole Friend” also serves as the first track taken from her new EP, with Karma set to be released on May 13th.

“This EP feels like it’s my Taylor Swift Reputation era – I’m calling out the people who hurt me and the friends who did me wrong and I feel like I’ve never been more explicit in my story telling, it’s super personal,” explains Chymes.

“It’s a therapeutic EP about shitty friendships and relationships I’ve had, and the journey of going from feeling crazy, heartbroken and lost and then healing from it all and cutting those toxic people from my life.”

Chymes’ “Black Hole Friend” is out now, while her Karma EP will be released on May 13th.
