Song You Need to Know: Children Collide, ‘Turrets’

With origins dating back to their second album from 2010, “Turrets” is Children Collide at their alt-rock best.

As Children Collide unveil their new album, Time Itself, the group have paired the arrival of their first record in nine years with a brand new single, sharing “Turrets” this morning.

Despite being officially released this morning, the origins of “Turrets” go back quite some time, with Children Collide giving the track a live debut at the Sydney show of their brief 2014/2015 reunion dates. However, for fans listening to the track thinking that it sounds somewhat like the material from their 2010 album, Theory of Everything, well, you’re not too far off.

“‘Turrets’ was first pulled together in a jam with Heath and Ryan at Pink Floyd’s old studio Brit Row with producer Youth during our first attempt at our second album Theory of Everything,” explains frontman Johnny Mackay. “Our label and management at the time convinced us to scrap it much to my chagrin.

“After the jam I sat upstairs and wrote some of my favourite lyrics but I’m not sure I could tell you what the fuck I’m on about as a whole. It’s just 20 mini stream-of-consciousness philosophies like ‘Sailing down the river Nihilism’ and ‘Turrets are where it’s at.’ Sometimes the meaning comes later I guess.”

Having slowly become a live favourite at the group’s live shows over the last couple of years, “Turrets” is representative of the sound showcased on new album Time Itself, which arrives more than nine years on from the band’s previous record.

Paired with a video directed by Lord Fascinator (Mackay), and filmed by Nico White and Dave Meagher, the psychedelic clip for ‘Turrets’ is the final in a trilogy made in the absence of touring, and follows on from the likes of “Man of The People”, which was released earlier this month.

With their new record out today, Children Collide are set to hit the road in November and December of this year for a long-awaited album launch tour, with details available below.
