Genre-bending Sydney trio Behind You have returned with one of the year’s most commanding releases, sharing the mystifying “Burning” late last week.
Having entered the scene as a duo just four years ago, Behind You (now comprising Frank Fisher on vocals, Joe Goddard on production, and Dylan Clay on percussion) quickly turned heads for their brash mix of electronic instrumentation delivered with punk sensibilities. Earning understandable comparisons to the likes of Death Grips, black midi, and Show Me the Body, Behind You fast proved they can’t be easily defined by a single label.
Last sharing new music by way of 2020’s “More Like Flesh”, last week saw Behind You return with their latest single, the brilliant “Burning”. Tending towards the hardcore punk side of things, the track is a blistering showcase of Fisher’s impassioned vocals, while the almost disorientating instrumentation turns this into one of the finest works to date.
Pairing the track with a self-directed music video, the visual accompaniment sees Fisher in a quaint natural environment, juxtaposing the serene environment with his furious performance.
“For the video, we returned to some of the bushland around where we grew up,” the group explained in a statement. “It felt like there was something prophetic or tragic about staging an act of narcissism in these places which might not exist in 100 years.
“Watching the footage back we realised there was this irony about it which made the extravagance of the track feel like a farce – screaming into a cheap camera while bushwalkers pass by – so we leaned into that during the edit.”
Arguably one of the country’s most electrifying and fascinating experimental outfits, Behind You are yet to reveal details about what else they’ve got in store this year, but if it’s anything like “Burning”, then fans are on track to be incredibly satisfied.
