In front of nearly 100,000 fans, Snoop’s arrival for the AFL Grand Final at MCG on Saturday carried all the swagger you’d expect.

But it was the fusion of global star power and homegrown talent that made the performance more than just a novelty booking.

The afternoon turned into unexpected musical crossovers, with Australian stars Jessica Mauboy, Baker Boy, and Tash Sultana joining the hip-hop icon on stage.

Mauboy made a guest appearance midway through to sing “Beautiful”, to a roar from the crowd, while Sultana joined his band for what was a show-stopping performance.

Baker Boy also joined him on stage, accompanied by a powerful choir featuring Emma Donovan and Kee’ahn, both of whom contributed to latest single “THICK SKIN” from his upcoming album DJANDJAY.

His set also featured a call-and-response act between the Cats and Lions fans, as two marching bands performed their club songs. He went on to sing “The Next Episode”, before “Nuthin’ But a ‘G’ Thang” and “Drop It Like It’s Hot”. He also remixed “Still D.R.E” with a didgeridoo performance, before finishing with “Who Am I (What’s My Name)?”.

Despite the controversy around his booking, due to claims that he has a history of misogyny and homophobia, raving reviews are already rolling in for his performance, with some on social media calling it “the sole highlight of the day”, and others saying it was the “best one of all time”.
