Slipknot have struck a deal with HarbourView Equity Partners that involves selling a majority stake in their catalog, including publishing and recording royalties.
“After 25 years of taking on the music business, we find ourselves with a partner that is willing to sign onto continuing what Slipknot started,” Slipknot’s Michael “Clown” Crahan said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, who broke the news. “Only they want to go even bigger. Get ready. Hail The Knot.”
Earlier this year, HarbourView bought a stake in Kelly Clarkson’s catalog. They’ve also made deals for the catalogs of Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, Christine McVie, T-Pain, Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, James Fauntleroy, George Benson, Luis Fonsi, Nelly, Wiz Khalifa, Kane Brown, and many others.
“Slipknot’s music has redefined heavy metal and created a global cultural phenomenon,” Sherrese Clarke, Founder and CEO of HarbourView Equity Partners, said in a statement. “Their catalog is a testament to their influence, passion, and enduring artistry within the genre. We pride ourselves on having our finger on the pulse of culture and with thorough analysis of audience engagement, we clearly see the cultural impact of Slipknot from the 1990’s to present. The enduring and relevant proof points with Slipknot remain core to our investing thesis, and HarbourView is honored to help preserve and amplify the group’s work for decades and generations to come.”
They haven’t said how much HarbourView paid for the Slipknot catalog, but Billboard revealed it was valued at $120 million earlier this year.
Slipknot are one of the most successful metal bands of the past 25 years. Many members have come and gone throughout that time, but Crahan, guitarist Mick Thomson, singer Corey Taylor, and DJ/keyboardist Sid Wilson have been there since the first record hit in 1999. Their most recent LP is 2022’s The End, So Far. They spent the summer playing shows across Europe, and last played July 19 at the Inkcarceration festival in Mansfield, Ohio
They join a very long list of major artists who have sold their catalogs in recent years, including Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Paul Simon, Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, and the Beach Boys.
