It’s been close to five long years since the highly-influential Icelandic post-rock outfit Sigur Rós graced Australian shores, but now, they’re set to rectify that absense with a newly-announced local tour.
Set to take place in August, the iconic outfit will kick things off with a show in New Zealand before heading west for a trio of shows in Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne.
Their first dates since visiting Australia in 2017, a lot has changed for the band since then. On one hand, they’ve unleashed a number of new releases, including their Route One, Liminal, and Liminal 2 remix albums, and also the long-awaited release of the 2004 recording of Odin’s Raven Magic.
However, there’s also been a bit of a personnel shift as well. While longtime drummer Orri Dýrason would exit Sigur Rós in 2018, it was just last month that the band announced the return of Kjartan Sveinsson, ther multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire who had previously departed the group in 2013.
With all this in mind though, it’s been close to a decade since the release of Sigur Rós’ latest album, with Kveikur arriving back in 2013. However, with their new lineup and newfound sense of stability, the group are already looking to record their long-awaited eighth album.
Though there’s no word as to whether Australian fans will get the chance to hear new music on their upcoming tour, it goes without saying that Sigur Rós are undoubtedly a band who you need to experience live at least one.
