Fresh from being named the winner of the Australian Music Prize for the second time, Sampa the Great has now announced the premiere of her upcoming short film, The Return.

Having released her long-awaited debut album of the same name back in September, 2019 was undoubtedly a big year for Sampa Tembo. Having been on the receiving end of critical acclaim for a number of years, The Return was a majestic release and resulted in a peak of #12 on the ARIA chart.

Now, with an inability to tour and a desire to keep fans engaged, Sampa is set to premiere a new short film documenting the journey leading up to her debut album.

“Since we’re homebound Ive been thinking of my home a lot,” Sampa wrote on Instagram recently. “Last year home wasn’t a constant for me with the making of the album and everything to do with it. Luckily we managed to capture the journey and made into a short film!

“We’ve decided to release it and show you the process behind the album, as well as the people in it and my home.”

Directed by Sanjay De Silva, the film is set to premiere on YouTube at 11pm AEST on Wednesday, April 22nd. To complement the release of The Return, Sampa is also set to be conducting a Q&A chat on YouTube to connect with her legions of fans.

“A real gem that is super special,” she concluded, “hope it moves you as much as it did me and my fam.”

While the video isn’t yet live, fans can gear up to catch The Return on YouTube when it goes live at this address.
