All those nights that Sabrina Carpenter spent working late (’cause she’s a singer) have paid off: Short n’ Sweet, her forthcoming studio album, is set for release on Aug. 23.
“This project is quite special to me and I hope it’ll be something special to you too,” Carpenter wrote on social media while simultaneously unveiling the album title, artwork, and release date. In the front cover art, blonde hair tumbles down her back and sunlight glimmers off a spot on her shoulder just above a bright red lipstick kiss mark. On the back cover, her hair is pulled to the side just enough to reveal a Short n’ Sweet tattoo on her other shoulder. “I also have a surprise coming for you on Thursday night,” she added. “So keep an eye out!!”
With its late-summer release date, Short n’ Sweet isn’t in a race to outrun the success of “Espresso,” its beaming lead single that has been ruling pop since mid-April. The record has already been certified platinum and marked Carpenter’s highest-charting release, landing at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.
And the singer doesn’t mind a slow burn. Her fifth and most recent album, Emails I Can’t Send, arrived in July 2022 following the release of a string of singles: “Skinny Dippy,” “Fast Times,” and “Vicious.” But it was the album’s fourth single, the love-drunk pop hit “Nonsense” that really broke through — thanks, at least in part, to the raunchy outro moments she improvises when playing it live — more than six months later. The deluxe edition of the album, Emails I Can’t Send Fwd, found another hit in “Feather.”
Last month, Carpenter made her Saturday Night Live debut with performances of “Espresso” and a medley combining “Feather” and “Nonsense,” the outro for which went: “He is 30 Rock hard ‘cause I said hi/My sense of humor is, but I am not dry/SNL I just came for the first time.” As always, she keeps it short and sweet.
