Sabrina Carpenter is set to jump down the rabbit hole and onto the big screen with a new musical adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classic Alice in Wonderland.

Carpenter is set to star in and produce the as-yet-untitled film, which will be based on Carroll’s work, though exact plot details are being kept under wraps. What is known, so far, is that the film will be written by Lorene Scafaria, whose writing credits include the Jennifer Lopez film Hustlers, the 2008 indie rom-com Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist, and the 2012 comedy Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (which she also directed).

The movie will be developed through Universal Pictures, with Marc Platt signed on as a producer. Platt has produced an array of musicals for both stage and screen over the years, including La La Land and Wicked.

Carpenter is a long-avowed fan of Alice in Wonderland, telling Interview in 2021 that it was in one of her favorite movies (ostensibly referring to the 1951 Disney animated flick). She also noted that her fans often gave her Alice in Wonderland-themed gifts, saying, “Someone actually sent me an original illustration from one of the original sketches from Alice in Wonderland, which is crazy.”

The pop star has also been keen on adapting Alice in Wonderland for several years. In 2020, she partnered with Netflix on a musical called Alice, though the project never materialized. In a 2022 radio interview, Carpenter called Alice “one of one of my favorite characters” and “one of my dream roles.” She also said at the time that the film would be set at a music festival called Wonderland, though it’s unclear if that plot idea will still be central to this new adaptation.

This will be Carpenter’s first major film project since she became one of the biggest pop stars in the world, but she does already have an extensive acting background. She spent three years starring in the Disney channel show Girl Meets World, and also made appearances on Law & Order: SVU and Orange Is the New Black. Previous film projects include the 2020 film Work It and 2022’s Tall Girl 2.

Carpenter released her most recent album, Man’s Best Friend, in August. She just received six Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year, as well as Record and Song of the Year for “Manchild.”
